Research Partnership
UCL X F.I.V.E.
F.I.V.E. is partnering with researchers from the University College London to launch the first-ever electroencephalography brain imaging study investigating 5-MeO-DMT’s effects on the human brain. During the study, researchers will use portable EEG imaging to assess brain mechanisms during the psychedelic experience and administer self-reported measures of cognition two weeks before and after participants arrive at the retreat center and in a six-month follow-up. UCL and F.I.V.E. aim to have outcomes available by the end of next year.
Understanding the underlying mechanism of action of 5-MeO-DMT on the human brain may inform future clinical and research studies as we see a heightened interest in 5-MeO-DMT as a potential treatment for mental health disorders due to its rapid onset and improvements in self-reported depression and anxiety brought on by its intense, acute mystical effects. This study may also support future investigations on the therapeutic potential of 5-MeO-DMT for chronic pain, cluster headaches, and other central nervous system indications.
The study will be taking place at Tandava, F.I.V.E.’s affiliated psychedelic retreat center based in Mexico that serves synthetic 5-MeO-DMT. For reasons of accuracy, ethics and safety, the research will utilize synthetic 5-MeO-DMT. The center received ethical approval from UCL as the site of this study due to its reputation as a leading psychedelic retreat center with vigorous safety protocols.
Get Involved in the Research Study
Volunteer Applications
F.I.V.E. is now recruiting 32 healthy volunteers to participate in the research beginning in January 2024. Volunteers must have prior experience with 5-MeO-DMT and sit still during their journeys every time. Volunteers will recieve 2 nights, 3 days at Tandava with meals, accommodation and 5-MeO-DMT. Airfare is not included.
